چکیده

The distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using red clump stars, and the discrepancy between red clump and tip of the red giant branch distances ABSTRACT I determine a distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using stars in the red clump and at the tip of the red giant branch. They are in very good agreement, with µ 0 = 20.66 mag. Comparing the magnitudes of the tip of the red giant branch and of the red clump in Fornax, Carina and the Magellanic Clouds, I propose a possible solution to the problem of the discrepancy between these two types of distance measurements.

Determination of the Distance to M33 Based on the Tip of the Red Giant Branch and the Red Clump

We have determined the distance to M33 using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) and the red clump (RC), from the V I photometry of stars in ten regions of M33 based onHST/WFPC2 images. The regions used in this study are located at R = 2.6 − 17.8 arcmin from the center of M33. The distance modulus to M33 obtained in this study, for an adopted foreground reddening of E(B − V ) = 0.04, is (m −...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Near - infrared observations of the Fornax dwarf galaxy . I . The red giant branch ⋆

Aims. We present a study of the evolved stellar populations in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Fornax based on wide-area near-infrared observations, aimed at obtaining new independent estimates of its distance and metallicity distribution. Assessing the reliability of near-infrared methods is most important in view of future spaceand ground-based deep near-infrared imaging of resolved stellar syste...

Radial velocities and membership of stars in the old , distant open cluster Berkeley 29 ⋆

Multi slit spectroscopy at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo was employed to measure radial velocities for 20 stars in the direction of the old open cluster Berkeley 29, the farthest known in our Galaxy. Membership information was derived for stars along all the red giant branch, in particular near its tip, and on the red clump. The sample of bona-fide cluster members was used to revise the clus...

The Red Giant Branch Tip and Bump of the Leo II dwarf spheroidal galaxy

We present V and I photometry of a 9.4 × 9.4 field centered on the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo II. The Tip of the Red Giant Branch is identified at I = 17.83± 0.03 and adopting 〈[M/H ]〉 = −1.53±0.2 from the comparison of RGB stars with Galactic templates, we obtain a distance modulus (m − M)0 = 21.84 ± 0.13, corresponding to a distance D = 233 ± 15 Kpc. Two significant bumps have been detected ...
